IPS e.max (Ivoclar Vivadent) is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic that has become synonymous with high-end anterior aesthetic restorations. At Respect U Dental Lab, it is one of our most frequently used materials — and for good reason.
Optical Properties Unlike Any Other
What makes IPS e.max stand out is its ability to mimic the light behavior of natural tooth structure. The material scatters, reflects, and transmits light in a way that no metal-containing restoration can replicate. Layers of characterization stains and glazes allow technicians to recreate individual nuances of tooth color — from the translucent incisal edge to the opaque cervical area.
Strength for Pressed and CAD/CAM Restorations
IPS e.max is available in two forms: IPS e.max Press (hot-pressed ceramic) and IPS e.max CAD (for milling). The pressed version offers the highest levels of aesthetic control and is used for veneers and anterior crowns. The CAD version is crystallized after milling, offering slightly higher strength and suitability for posterior use.
Indications and Contraindications
IPS e.max is ideal for: veneers, anterior and premolar crowns, inlays and onlays, and implant crowns in low-force situations. It is generally not recommended for full-arch bridges in high-bruxism cases or posterior three-unit bridges under heavy occlusal load — where zirconia remains a better structural choice.
The Layering Technique: Where Artistry Matters
At Respect U Dental Lab, our technicians hand-layer IPS e.max Ceram over the lithium disilicate core for maximum aesthetic depth. This technique — known as cut-back and layering — is time-intensive but produces results that cannot be matched by monolithic restorations alone. The end result is a crown or veneer virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
IPS e.max has earned its reputation as the material of choice for aesthetic dentistry. When your patient's case demands exceptional beauty — a smile makeover, anterior rehabilitation, or single-tooth replacement in the visible zone — e.max delivers. Contact us to discuss your next aesthetic case.
